The introduction of AI-generated summaries in Google Search, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, is poised to revolutionize the search landscape. As these “AI Overviews” start to appear in search results, many are questioning what this means for SEO, referral traffic, and overall brand discovery.

Google’s new generative search experience, similar to ChatGPT, promises to deliver concise, AI-generated responses to search queries. This shift comes as the web has increasingly optimized for long-tail search queries, resulting in numerous pages vying to answer common questions and attract traffic. While this reassurance is promising, it’s essential to approach it with caution. If Google employs its standard ranking algorithm to select sources for its AI-generated answers and includes links to these sources in the summaries, there might still be opportunities for traffic generation. Users interested in more detailed information might click through to the source sites. However, many queries are likely to be superficial, with users content with the brief overview provided by the AI, thus reducing the need for deeper exploration.

Despite Google’s assurances, the transition to AI overviews will undoubtedly have some impact on web traffic and SEO strategies. The extent of these changes will depend on how extensively Google implements these summaries and how users respond to them. While the potential for traffic reductions is significant, the actual outcome will become clearer as the AI overviews become more integrated into search results.
