Meta Expands Promotional DM Tools: What Small Businesses Should Know

Published On: July 18th, 2025Categories: MetaBy

Meta is leaning further into messaging, and small businesses should take note.

The platform just rolled out an updated version of its customer re-engagement messaging feature, which lets businesses send ongoing promotional messages through Messenger. The goal? Help brands keep conversations going with customers even after a sale or support chat ends. As per Meta:

“Today, people often chat with businesses to make purchases or get support. But once their questions are answered or their orders are placed, the conversation often stops there. This leaves businesses with no easy way to follow up or keep interested customers engaged with updates and offers. To help businesses seamlessly re-engage and retain customers through chat, we’re introducing marketing messages on Messenger. With marketing messages, businesses can initiate promotional messages to people who have subscribed to receive them and keep that conversation going.”

Here’s what that looks like in practice: brands can now send personalized marketing messages directly through Messenger to people who have opted in. These messages can link to a specific promotion, product catalog, or page, giving businesses more opportunities to drive repeat interest.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because a version of this feature has been around for a while via Meta’s Messenger API. But this update introduces a few meaningful upgrades:

– More customization and personalization: Use CRM lists to target specific customers with tailored messages and offers.

– Click-to-Message ad integration: Combine outbound messaging with ad campaigns that encourage conversations.

– New metrics: Track performance with new insights like cost per delivered message, cost per message link click, and more down-funnel metrics coming later this year.

Meta’s also working on future updates, including tag-based targeting, so you’ll be able to segment your audience even further using custom labels in your CRM uploads.

What to Keep in Mind

Promotional messaging can be powerful, but it comes with boundaries and risks. Meta is capping businesses at one marketing message per user per day, and it’s clear the goal is to keep the experience user-friendly, not spammy.

As with email and SMS, relevance is everything. If you go overboard on these tools, users may mute or opt out. Use it well, and you’ve got a direct line to re-engage warm leads and stay top of mind.

This tool works best for businesses that already have some kind of subscriber or CRM strategy in place. If you’re collecting email addresses or phone numbers at checkout or online, this could be a way to add Messenger to your communication mix, especially for timely offers or seasonal promotions.

Why It Matters

More than ever, messaging is a key part of the customer experience, and Meta knows it. The company is investing heavily in tools that keep users inside its platforms while still giving businesses more ways to connect, promote, and convert.

For small businesses, this isn’t about replacing email or ads; it’s about layering in one more way to follow up with people who’ve already shown interest. If you’ve got an engaged customer base and thoughtful offers to share, this could be a smart next step in your retention strategy.
