Instagram Announces Customizable Profile Grids for Greater Content Control

Published On: February 8th, 2025Categories: InstagramBy

Your Instagram profile is about to get a makeover. The social media giant is currently testing a new feature that enables grids to be rearranged, giving brands, creators, and general users more control over how content is displayed. This update, which was first tested back in 2022, has now been confirmed by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri.

“In order to maintain creator control, we’re building a tool so you can reorder your entire grid and make it whatever you want,” Mosseri stated.

With this change, Instagram users will be able to rearrange their grid thumbnails in any order they choose. Meaning, instead of the posts showing up in chronological order, users can curate their content to better showcase their work, highlight their best posts, or even create aesthetically pleasing themes.

This update comes shortly after the rollout of the taller profile grid format, which was met with mixed feedback from users. While the formatting shift was meant to better accommodate the vertical nature of most Instagram content, including Reels, it hurt the look of the curated layouts that many users spent time perfecting. The ability to customize grid thumbnails will help address these concerns by allowing users to regain control over their profile appearances.

Instagram is also exploring other changes to improve profile presentation and content sharing, including Highlights. Currently located in its own section at the top of the profile, Highlights may soon be integrated into the grid as its own tab. While Highlights are a great way to showcase key moments, special offers, etc., they currently push the grid content lower on a user’s profile. This update is meant to create a cleaner, more streamlined look while maintaining its functionality.

One other potential feature in development is the ability to post directly to the profile grid, bypassing the feed entirely. This could be useful for creators who want to maintain a cohesive aesthetic on their profiles without necessarily pushing every update to their followers’ feeds.

These changes reflect Instagram’s efforts to improve user experience and keep up with evolving content trends. As platforms continue to shift toward vertical-first content, Instagram is adjusting its design and functionality to accommodate these formats while also giving creators more control.

For brands, businesses, and creators, the ability to customize grids opens up new opportunities to engage audiences, improve first impressions, and maintain a sleek online presence. Whether users want to showcase their best-performing content, organize posts by theme, or simply create a more visually appealing profile, this update provides greater flexibility.

While Instagram has yet to announce an official launch date, these updates are expected to become available in the coming months. For now, it’s important to start thinking strategically about how you might want your profile to look so you are ready to go when you can start customizing.
