How TikTok Is Helping Small Businesses Turn Discovery Into Sales

Since its creation, a lot of business owners have looked at TikTok as the app for dances, trends, and viral videos. Now? It’s turning into one of the biggest discovery platforms online, especially for small businesses.

TikTok recently shared new data during a Small Business Month event in New York, and the overall message was pretty obvious: small brands are finding customers there fast.

Here’s what stood out.

Q: Why is TikTok suddenly putting such a focus on small businesses?

Small businesses are performing really well on the platform. TikTok shared that searches for “small business” on the app jumped 479% earlier this year, which is kind of amazing when you think about it.

The company also said nearly 9 out of 10 small and midsize businesses surveyed reported sales increases after promoting themselves on TikTok. That’s likely why the platform keeps leaning harder into shopping tools, business features, and AI-powered ad tools. They clearly see small business growth as a major part of the app moving forward.

Q: What makes TikTok different from other platforms for business owners?

The discovery piece is key for brands. On many social platforms, reach depends heavily on how many followers you already have. TikTok works differently. A business with a tiny audience can still end up in front of a huge number of people if the content connects. That’s a big reason smaller brands have been able to grow there faster than expected.

The company even shared research showing that two-thirds of TikTok Shop users discovered a new business on the platform. Most of them were small businesses, not giant companies. That’s a pretty major shift from how online visibility used to work.

Q: Are people actually buying from businesses they find on TikTok?

Yes, and quickly. One stat that really stood out was how fast people move from discovery to purchase. TikTok said more than half of users bought from a newly discovered brand within just a few days.

Not months later. Not “maybe.” Days! That’s probably why so many businesses are suddenly treating TikTok less like a social platform and more like a sales channel.

Q: What kind of business content is actually doing well right now?

The less corporate-looking stuff. A lot of the businesses TikTok highlighted weren’t posting polished commercials or perfectly branded campaigns. It was founders talking to the camera, showing packaging orders, filming behind the scenes, sharing routines, or just documenting everyday moments.

One business owner said a single day-in-the-life video completely changed her business trajectory almost overnight. Another talked about how customers connected more with his personality and restaurant atmosphere than traditional advertising. That’s kind of the thing with TikTok. People respond to businesses that feel human.

Q: Does this mean every business needs to drop everything and get on TikTok?

Not really. But it does say a lot about how people are finding things right now. Discovery has shifted. People aren’t only going to Google first anymore. They’re finding restaurants, boutiques, services, even contractors and recipes through social content without actively searching for them.

TikTok just happens to be one of the strongest examples of that right now. It’s really good at putting businesses in front of people who weren’t necessarily looking, but are still the right fit.

That’s a very different dynamic than traditional search, where intent comes first and discovery comes second.

Q: TikTok also mentioned AI tools. What are those supposed to do?

In short, they’re trying to make it easier for businesses to actually keep up. TikTok is rolling out more AI-powered tools to help with things like creating content, testing ideas, improving ad performance, and refining targeting. The goal is basically speed and efficiency, especially for small businesses that don’t have big internal teams handling all of this.

A lot of platforms are moving in the same direction right now. Some of it will probably prove genuinely useful, some of it will evolve over time. But the bigger picture is that TikTok is investing heavily in making advertising faster and more automated.

Q: What’s the biggest takeaway from all of this?

TikTok isn’t really just a “social media app” anymore in the way people used to think about it.

For a lot of businesses, it’s becoming a discovery engine. It’s a place where people find brands before they even know they’re looking for them.

And the businesses doing well there aren’t necessarily the ones with the most polished content. They’re the ones that feel real. Showing the process, the people, the personality behind the brand.

That tends to outperform overly produced marketing right now. And for small businesses, that’s actually a pretty big shift in the right direction.
