Google’s Preferred Sources Feature Could Reshape Search Visibility

Published On: June 28th, 2025Categories: GoogleBy

Google is testing something new that might quietly reshape how your business shows up in search results, especially if content is a big part of your visibility strategy.

It’s called Preferred Sources, and here’s how it works: users can now “star” their favorite news outlets to prioritize them in the Top Stories carousel. If you’re part of that list, your content could show up more often (and more prominently) for those users when relevant. A second carousel called From Your Sources might also appear, offering even more exposure.

Right now, this feature is only available in the U.S. and India through Search Labs, but the test signals a bigger shift. Google’s still using its algorithm to decide rankings; this doesn’t replace that, but it adds a new layer of personalization. And that could have real implications for how and when your content gets seen.

What This Means for Visibility

If your business creates content like blogs, news, or thought leadership, Preferred Sources gives loyal audiences another way to find you more easily, which is a big deal. It reinforces something we already know: relationships matter. If someone actively chooses your site as a source they trust, Google may reward that trust by surfacing your content more often.

But this also means breaking through as a newer or smaller publisher could get harder if users gravitate towards familiar names. That’s where brand credibility and content consistency come in. You want to be the name they know and the one they trust enough to star.

Why Small Businesses Should Care

Preferred Sources is still a test, but it fits a bigger trend in search: Google is giving users more control without ditching the algorithm entirely. It’s a reminder that visibility isn’t just about keywords and rankings; it’s about real connection.

If your audience feels a connection to your brand, they’ll read your content, come back for more, and maybe even prioritize it. That’s why your voice, your community, and your consistency matter just as much as your SEO strategy.

Want to Stay Visible?

If Google rolls this out more broadly, content strategies may need a refresh. Now’s a good time to ask: Is your brand recognizable? Is it building trust? Are you creating relevant content that would make people want to “star” your site?
