Google Expands AI Protections Against Invalid Ad Traffic: What Businesses Should Know
If you’ve ever managed a Google Ads campaign, you know how frustrating invalid traffic can be. One minute you’re celebrating a spike in clicks, and then you realize half of them came from bots or accidental taps. Not ideal. These low-quality interactions, known as Invalid Traffic (IVT), have been a pain point for advertisers for years. During the first quarter of 2025, the global IVT traffic rate on the web was 18% and on mobile apps was 31%, according to Pixalate.
Now, after a period of quiet testing, Google’s working to tackle that problem head-on with a new round of AI-powered protections.
As Google explains:
“We’ve long used AI to fight IVT, and new applications are further improving our results. Our Ad Traffic Quality team, with Google Research and Google DeepMind, recently introduced industry-leading defenses powered by large language models to more precisely identify ad placements generating invalid behaviors.”
Translation: Google’s AI is getting a lot better at figuring out which clicks are real and which ones aren’t.
The new system looks at things like how users interact with ads, where the ad appears, and what’s happening on the page around it. And according to Google, it’s already working. The company reports a 40% drop in IVT tied to deceptive or disruptive practices since these updates rolled out.
What does that mean for you? Cleaner data, lower wasted spending, and a better shot at reaching actual humans, not bots.
One of the underrated benefits is that better filtering means better insights. When you’re not sifting through fake clicks, it’s easier to see what’s actually resonating and adjust your strategy accordingly. Messaging. Placements. Audiences. It all becomes clearer when the noise gets filtered out.
Google also says advertisers won’t be charged for invalid clicks (even if an ad is served), and they’re backing up the AI with both automated and manual reviews. So yes, Google’s taking on more of the heavy lifting. But that doesn’t mean your job is done. It’s still important to check in on campaigns regularly, watch performance trends, and make smart adjustments along the way.
Bottom line: AI isn’t just helping you target more effectively; it’s helping make advertising a little cleaner, safer, and easier to trust. And that’s a win for everyone spending money in the Google ecosystem.
