Beyond Your Bids: What Google’s New Smart Bidding Exploration Means for Growth-Minded Marketers

If your business has conducted paid search campaigns, you’re already aware that your bidding strategy can significantly impact your results. Google recently unveiled its latest update, Smart Bidding Exploration, which isn’t just another tool for your advertising box; it’s a signal: the way we optimize for conversions is about to shift.

Unveiled at Google Marketing Live, Smart Bidding Exploration is Google’s most significant bidding update in over a decade. And it’s not just a new switch to flip; it’s an entirely new way to unlock untapped conversion potential from the campaigns you’re already running.

What is Smart Bidding Exploration?

In short, Smart Bidding Exploration is a new opt-in feature that lets Google’s algorithm bid more freely, within your existing campaign structure, to help you capture more conversions from queries you’ve been missing.

It doesn’t expand your audience or rewrite your targeting, and it doesn’t force you into a new campaign structure. Essentially, Smart Bidding Exploration allows for more flexibility in how your ROAS (return on ad spend) targets are applied, which is typically within a 10–30% range.

By loosening those constraints, Google can push harder on queries its AI believes will perform, even if they fall slightly outside your usual efficiency guardrails.

Why this matters:

Search campaigns often plateau, and when that happens, many advertisers double down on what worked before: tighter targeting, lower bids, and more control.

Performance plateaus aren’t always fixable with more discipline; sometimes, they need more exploration. That’s where Smart Bidding Exploration comes in. Instead of forcing you to completely reset your ROAS targets (which can create performance volatility), this feature adds nuance to your approach. It gently broadens your eligible reach without breaking your rules.

It’s handy for Broad Match and Dynamic Search Ad campaigns, where the right query might already be out there—you’ve just been bidding too conservatively to show up.

What to expect from reporting:

You won’t get query-level reporting for every impression due to privacy thresholds, but Google will give you insight into:

  • The number of new search categories driving impressions or conversions.
  • How much traffic came from those categories.
  • The lift in conversions compared to your baseline.

You can even test it with Drafts & Experiments and view performance in your Bid Strategy reports.

Should you experiment?

If your campaigns feel tight, static, or limited by ROAS pressure, yes, test! Smart Bidding Exploration offers a middle ground: one that doesn’t force structural changes or audience expansion but still gives Google’s AI room to do what it does best.

While your business may be used to running ads in a way that’s always worked, if you’re serious about scale, it might be time to step out of your comfort zone. Smart Bidding Exploration is about giving your campaigns the space to grow without losing the structure that’s already working.
